Dr Gaurav Sharma
Young Achiever of the Year 2021

Former Labour Party MP from Hamilton West, Dr Gaurav Sharma, who also holds the recognition of being the first-ever Kiwi Indian electorate MP was awarded as the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame Young Achiever Award 2021.

Dr Sharma’s long list of achievement at a freshening young age is not just limited to academic excellence and political success, but also in volunteering and community service and the desire to help others, which makes him a true role model for the younger generations of the Kiwi Indian community.

He has been involved in public health, policy and consulting in New Zealand, Spain, USA, Nepal, Vietnam, Switzerland and Mongolia. He has a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from The George Washington University in Washington D.C. where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Roshan Nauhria
Hall of Fame inductee 2021

Roshan Nauhria, a Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame inductee (2021), is a New Zealand-based industrialist and philanthropist. He migrated from India to New Zealand in 1972 with his wife and later founded the Nauhria Group of Companies, which operates across construction, precast, reinforced steel, and related industries.

He has contributed to enhancing economic relations between New Zealand and India, including participation in a business delegation with former Prime Minister John Key in 2011.

Nauhria has actively supported cultural and religious initiatives in New Zealand, helping establish the Balmoral Temple in Auckland and supporting gurdwaras in Hamilton, Otahuhu, and Papatoetoe, as well as being associated with the ISKCON Temple in Riverhead.

He has also funded charitable initiatives in his hometown of Dharamkot, Punjab, including educational programs for girls.

In recognition of his contributions to the community, he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009.

His career reflects significant business achievement and sustained community involvement.

Anjum Rahman
Community Excellence Award winner 2021

Anjum Nusrat Rahman is a leading and reassuring voice for ethnic women in this country, particularly Muslim women, and does not need any introduction.

A Chartered Accountant by profession, Anjum has always had a passion for building stronger communities.

She was involved in the establishment of the Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand in 1989 – a national organisation dedicated to providing a voice and representation for Muslim women – and became its first secretary.

She sits on a number of boards sharing her financial skills and consensus-building approach, fresh perspectives and strong community connections.

Since 2002 Anjum Rahman is the founding Member and Trustee of Shama (Hamilton Ethnic Women’s Centre) – an organisation provides support for women from ethnic minority communities.

Also, in 2019 she founded the Inclusive Aotearoa Collective, Tahono, a project that will develop a national strategy for belonging and inclusion in New Zealand and implement it using the Constellation Model.

Supreme Sikh Society
Community Organisation of the Year 2021

The inaugural Indian Weekender Community Service Award was presented to the Supreme Sikh Society NZ for their exemplary work with the community and people across the nation in the true spirit of selfless service solely for the benefit of the people. It is a shining and inspiring example and model of how a community organisation ought to be.

A trailblazer in community initiatives and rising to the occasion every single time in a crisis, Supreme Sikh Society NZ has successfully completed some of the biggest independent projects for community welfare and wellbeing around Auckland.

Some of these include an international standard sporting complex with sports fields and infrastructure, a heritage school, a preschool besides many others to serve the community with a single-minded sense of purpose.

Members of this organisation rose to the occasion during the ongoing pandemic, providing much needed help to wide sections of the community during the lockdowns, by way of free meals and other much needed services.
