Hall of Fame Inductee 2013

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, the inaugural inductee into the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame in 2013, is widely recognised as a pioneering figure for the Indian and Sikh communities in New Zealand’s political landscape.
He made history as the first Member of Parliament of Indian origin and the first Sikh elected to the New Zealand Parliament, marking a significant milestone in the country’s evolving multicultural identity.
Migrating to New Zealand with limited support networks, Bakshi built his life steadily, establishing himself professionally while supporting his young family. His journey reflects perseverance and a strong commitment to community and public service.
Bakshi went on to serve four terms as a National Party list MP from 2008 to 2020, a tenure that underscored both his leadership and the trust he earned among constituents. During his time in Parliament, he was a consistent advocate for multiculturalism, community welfare, and greater recognition of ethnic diversity.
His presence in Parliament carried deep symbolic importance, particularly for Indian and Sikh communities, representing both progress and possibility within New Zealand’s democratic framework.
